This is not a course on ancient times, but it is an introductory course that introduces the different disciplines of a history or literature major. It is a multi-subject course that covers ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt. The course is offered in the Spring semester and it can either be a joint class with another class on ancient Greece, or it can be completely independent from the other course.
City of Ember is divided into four different classes. These are Civics and Ethnicity, Eros and Civilization, Greatness and Glory, and Language and Civilization. Each class has its own essay topic. The essay topics for each class are designed to reflect the class' main theme. The essay topics are set up so that the students are required to write about their personal experiences and opinions about various themes. The major reason for the essays to be written is that the students are asked to write about their personal experiences and opinions about the course and its curriculum. Writing an essay about the subject matter is part of the learning process in many other classes, but it is different in City of Ember. Some students do not like the idea of being asked to write because they feel that this would mean that they are going to be evaluated on what they learned in class, and that would not be a good way to learn anything. They also fear that their thoughts and opinions are going to be put into a generalized form that would then be shared with the class as a whole, and that is not how individual choices are supposed to be handled. Most students who take this course agree that it is a challenging assignment. However, there are some who say that it is fun and even educational, and that it will be worth it when it comes time to write the essays. There are two types of essay topics that are assigned for City of Ember: one or two-page essay topics, and one-page essay topics. The one-page essay topics are just a small section of a larger essay. The goal of the one-page essay topics is to determine if the student can create a substantial paper on a topic that he or she already knows a lot about. The second type of essay topics is very similar to the first type, but instead of focusing on an individual topic, it is about a topic that the student has heard about in class. Both types of subject matter, require that the student write about something that is already familiar to him or her. It is possible to learn new information, but there are a lot of topics that are not going to be covered. Those topics include religion, war, and the arts. The subjects that are covered in class include Rome, Greek culture, and Egyptian culture. City of Ember essay topics are set up in such a way that they cover all areas of the course. The subject matter of the course includes ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt. It will discuss why these cultures came to exist, the changes they went through, and the great legacy that they left behind. Essays on ancient Greek and Roman culture should always start with what it means to be Greek or Roman. The essays should look at how the civilization came to be, how they interacted with each other, and how they changed over time. Essays on ancient Egyptian culture should start with the different aspects of that culture, what people in that culture believed, and how that culture influenced their society. After this, the essay topics on ancient Greece can be used to discuss how the Athenians were influenced by the Greeks and the different myths that surrounded them.
